AGROSAVIA and Instituto Nacional de Tecnológica Agropecuaria (INTA) of Costa Rica strengthen alliances and human capital in research on carbon, nutrition, and diversity measurement methodologies in livestock systems

AGROSAVIA and Instituto Nacional de Tecnológica Agropecuaria (INTA) of Costa Rica strengthen alliances and human capital in research on carbon, nutrition, and diversity measurement methodologies in livestock systems

Bogota D.C. May 26, 2023. Within the project "Carbon, nutrition, and diversity as sustainable innovations for use recommendations in regional silvopastoral systems," financed by APC Colombia and Mideplan Costa Rica and developed by AGROSAVIA and INTA, various activities to contribute to the sustainability of cattle farms and the assessment of silvopastoral systems (SPS) have been carried out. The specific project objectives are: a) Determine what type of plant resources (grass, shrubs, trees) management and use practices are present in various livestock areas of both countries; b) Carry out carbon (C) estimates and some indicators on the diversity present in SPS and with this information, c) Develop regional recommendations for the use of SPS and finally, d) Make a technical contribution to strengthen an emerging network of actors that, from both countries, perpetuate the exchange of experiences and knowledge on ecosystem services in SPS.

Sergio Abarca, Leader of INTA's technical team, states: In this cooperation project, C emissions and absorption or storage are the basis for developing scientific tools that generate viable results for farmers and support territorial entities' regulatory and normative frameworks. This, in turn, will facilitate the transition towards livestock that is informed and empowered of their sustainable management. In addition, he refers that the project's approach to climate variability is mitigation and adaptation, and the data managed towards knowledge are used for livestock transformation.

The researcher Sonia Ospina outlines that the project responds to the sustainability pacts in both countries, which, transversally, promotes actions that allow conservation and production, seeking to move towards the transition of productive systems committed to climate resilience and sustainability.

It was also planned to respond to the pacts for Science, Technology, and Innovation, so fundamental today to achieve the transformation towards livestock that, in addition to being friendly to the environment, has worldwide social acceptance since recent studies at the global level and for Latin America and the Caribbean, report that well-managed livestock in SPS contributes to capture C and minimizes the generation of other greenhouse gases (GHG).

The project also contributes to the gender approach in science, which occurs with the participation of researchers from INTA and AGROSAVIA and women's continuous and thoughtful participation in livestock activity in both countries. It should be noted that the project promotes equal development between men and women by facilitating women's decisive and differentiated participation in training and the exchange of opportunities with Costa Rica.

The results obtained, says Cesar Augusto Forero Camacho, Ph.D. Researcher at AGROSAVIA will contribute to technical-regional indicators of C and diversity that would improve use recommendations in a network of demonstrative farms of the global program called "Sustainable Livestock Work Table," developed in Colombia and Costa Rica. This contribution to the regional networks of actors in both countries has evidenced sustainable livestock schemes through the SPS. Further, seeking to maximize this scope, from May 26 to June 2, 2023, AGROSAVIA will carry out a scientific exchange of the base team of the project to Costa Rica.

In this exchange, a scientific agenda will be completed on three main fronts: field visits and evaluation of carbon capture methodologies in cattle farms and with SPS; exchanges of laboratory methodologies on C measurement and progress in animal nutrition; and the participation in the VIII International Wallace Conference, with three presentations on project results.

In this sense, INTA as a cooperator, international leader in low-carbon livestock issues, and host of this exchange, will have an advisory role and will be a "permanent" reference in the innovative presentation of knowledge of regional technical indicators based on the C emission factors practically and feasible to reproduce in other regional livestock contexts, which will then be socialized for all audiences.
