Caribia is an open-door center that has become an agricultural development hub for the Caribbean region, benefiting the region with results generated by applying basic research to key commodities for food security and to production systems of small and medium producers of crops such as maize, cassava, bananas and citrus fruits.

Due to its strategic location and its proximity to the three main ports in Colombia, this Center’s research has also focused on export products, such as mango, chili, eggplant, avocado and melon.

The Caribia Research Center has had a substantial and positive impact on production and productivity indicators, especially in the Magdalena and South Atlantic regions, as it has improved both yields and efficiency in the use of inputs.

Currently, in agreement with the region’s association of banana growers (Asociación de Bananeros del Magdalena y La Guajira, ASBAMA), the Center has a banana technology showcase exhibiting the most advanced technical standards within the framework of precision agriculture. This joint effort contributes to structuring and implementing research programs and projects that meet the needs of the banana industry in the region.

The Caribia Research Center has contributed to the palm sector, by growing oil palms and tropical fruit trees, thanks to the development of the O × G AGROSAVIA El Mira hybrids—high-quality materials, tolerant to bud rot (BR) disease and endorsed by agronomic evaluation tests.

Industrial Engineer from Universidad del Magdalena and an M.Sc. in Commercial and Marketing Management through an agreement between Universidad de Barcelona and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. He is also an M.Sc. in Business Administration and Management at Escuela Europea de Negocios - Eude Business School. He has 10 years of experience as a consultant in investment projects and implementation of quality management systems and administrative and financial management of companies. In the last decade, he has been a professor in human management, finance and budget, and senior management. He is currently the Director of the Caribia Research Center, where, since 2015, he has worked as an Administrative and Financial Coordinator.
