Eje Cafetero Site
The Eje Cafetero Site facilitates AGROSAVIA’s relationship and institutional articulation in this region of the country, including the departments of Caldas, Quindío and Risaralda. It focuses its efforts on solving technological constraints related to the networks of cocoa, fruit, permanent crops, and livestock and minor species, as well as those of transitional and agroindustrial crops. The Eje Cafetero Site is managed by the La Selva Research Center, located in the department of Antioquia.
One of the Site’s most important activities is reviewing and adjusting the research, development and innovation (R + D + i) agendas of the production chains prioritized in each of the departments of the Coffee-Growing Region. This was instrumental for constructing the departmental files of the Strategic Plan for Science, Technology and Innovation of the Colombian Agricultural Sector (Plan Estratégico de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación del sector Agropecuario colombiano, PECTIA). In executing the Seed Plan and with the objective of strengthening capacities of the sector, work was done on the characterization and validation of local small-scale banana producers in the municipalities of Caldas and Risaralda. Under an agreement with the Colombian federation of plantain producers (Federación de Productores de Plátano de Colombia, Fedeplacol), the project "Validation of emerging technologies in plantain cropping in the three departments of the Eje Cafetero, northern Valle del Cauca and southwestern Antioquia" was implemented. In coordination with different actors, entities and unions in the region, activities have been carried out to link and transfer technology in avocado, citrus, plantain, sugarcane (for production of panela), blackberry, cocoa, livestock and bees, among others, as a strategy to contribute to technical change in these production systems.
