Taluma Experiment Farm
The Taluma Site is located in the rural area of the municipality of Puerto López, Meta, in an area characteristic of the subregion of the Colombian Orinoco flatlands. It has an area of 488 hectares located at an altitude of 180 masl, with average annual rainfall of 2,134 mm and average temperature of 26.8°C.
The landscape is made up of medium and high terraces with an undulated or slightly undulated topography; the soils are acidic, with low contents of organic matter, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium, and high saturation of interchangeable aluminum, characteristic of oxisols.
The innovation network of transitional and agroindustrial crops conducts research and validation of hybrids of yellow maize and high-yielding rice and soybean varieties, with specific adaptation to the high plains. Studies on biopesticides and biofertilizers are carried out to integrate them in crop management schemes. A strong emphasis is given to site-specific agricultural strategies and to the improvement of the soil’s productive capacity as an alternative to increase competitiveness and sustainability of production systems.
The permanent crops network carries out actions on integrated crop management, evaluation of frequency and tapping systems in rubber clones, as well as strategies for managing phytosanitary aspects, and diagnosis and evaluation of technologies for the establishment and management of forest plantations in the Colombian high plains.
The fruit tree network, on the other hand, carries out work on citrus and pineapple crops focused on determining the adaptation and production of materials and cropping strategies. Work on cashews focuses on the development of clones that are outstanding for their adaptation and performance in the conditions of the Colombian high plains.
