AGROSAVIA and partners strengthen ecological restoration in the Mijitayo River basin

Pasto, Nariño. December 24, 2025. Within the framework of forest policy and institutional commitment to environmental sustainability, AGROSAVIA, through the Obonuco Research Center, in coordination with EMPOPASTO S.A. E.S.P. and ENTREAMBIENTE, joined efforts during the month of December to support the project Active Ecological Restoration in Degraded Areas of the Supply Basins of EMPOPASTO S.A. E.S.P.

As a result of this interinstitutional alliance, planting, isolation, and ecological rehabilitation activities were carried out by implementing live fences and biological corridors along approximately 3,400 linear meters of livestock-use properties. These actions aim to reduce anthropogenic pressure on strategic areas, improve ecological connectivity, and promote more sustainable, productive practices.

For the restoration work, multipurpose forest and shrub species were used, selected for their adaptability, contribution to soil recovery, and potential for livestock feeding. Notable species include elderberry (Sambucus nigra), Mexican sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia), Peruvian elder (Sambucus nigra subsp. peruviana), and Andean alder (Alnus acuminata). These species contribute to slope stabilization, protection of water sources, increased biodiversity, and the provision of key ecosystem services.

The intervened areas are located in the Mijitayo River basin, a strategic ecosystem for the water supply of the municipality of Pasto. The intervention makes a significant contribution to ecological restoration processes, the strengthening of biological corridors, and the sustainability of supply basins, aligning with conservation objectives and climate change adaptation.

Through initiatives such as this, AGROSAVIA and its partners reaffirm their commitment to integrated territorial management, protection of water resources, and the transition toward resilient productive systems, promoting nature-based solutions that integrate science, territory, and interinstitutional participation.
