AGROSAVIA strengthens regional livestock production in the South of Bolívar

AGROSAVIA strengthens regional livestock production in the South of Bolívar
  • The objective of this project is to unify technical, administrative, and financial efforts for the development of genetic and reproductive technologies for cattle in the municipality of Santa Rosa del Sur, Bolívar.

Bucaramanga, Santander. December 12, 2025. From the livestock and small species network of the La Suiza Research Center (Santander), with support from the Motilonia Research Center (Cesar), the implementation of the agreement between Corporación colombiana de investigación agropecuaria - AGROSAVIA and the Office of the Municipal Mayor of Santa Rosa del Sur in the department of Bolívar, through its Secretariat of Environment, Mining, and Agriculture, initiated in December 2025.

This partnership originated from the prioritization of the municipality as part of the Development Program with a Territorial Focus (PDET) and the Zone Most Affected by the Armed Conflict (ZOMAC), considering that the South of Bolívar is a strategic subregion of the Colombian Caribbean, characterized by its biodiversity, a predominantly rural economy, and a strong productive vocation with small- and medium-scale producers who contribute to local food sovereignty.

One of the most representative activities in the area is livestock production, since, as stated by Researcher Juan Leonardo Cardona from the La Suiza Research Center, “its relevance lies in its capacity to generate income, employment, and food security, as well as in its strategic role in rural development and territorial stabilization processes. Santa Rosa del Sur has significant livestock potential, with 50,226 head of cattle across 1,577 farms, making it the municipality with the largest number of livestock farms in the department of Bolívar, of which approximately 70% belong to small-scale producers.”

This project will address reproductive topics, as well as a component for strengthening livestock feeding systems, based on the management of forage and soil resources. Among the project’s goals is the strengthening of at least eight associations of small- and medium-scale livestock producers from the districts of San Lucas, San Isidro, San Juan de Río Grande, Los Canelos, Fátima, Buena Vista, San Francisco, and Arrayanes.

AGROSAVIA will transfer technologies to strengthen artificial insemination processes, embryo transfer, strategic supplementation of cattle, and forage and soil management on livestock farms, under a sustainability framework aimed at increasing the municipality’s livestock production. During its implementation, priority will be given to working with rural youth and women as a fundamental driver for generational renewal and female empowerment in the municipality’s livestock sector.

With this initiative, AGROSAVIA hopes to consolidate applied research and technology transfer processes in prioritized territories, where the adoption of technologies is increasingly in demand.
