Pasto, Nariño. December 5, 2025. On November 27, at AGROSAVIA’s Obonuco Research Center in Pasto, Nariño, a socialization session was held for the interinstitutional project on Phytosanitary Excellence in potato cultivation for the department of Nariño. This initiative is carried out in collaboration with VECOL (Veterinary and Biologicals of Colombia) and UDCA (University of Applied and Environmental Sciences).
The fundamental objective of this applied research project is to generate tools for Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPDM) specific to the region. The pillars of the research include:
Development of an Epidemiological Map: The spatial distribution and incidence of the main phytopathogenic agents and arthropod vectors affecting potato crop health will be established in the production areas of the municipalities of Pasto and Tangua. This epidemiological mapping is crucial for agronomic decision-making.
Development of a Specific Integrated Management Plan (IMP): Based on the epidemiological information, a technical protocol will be structured for the rational control of disease-causing agents and their vectors, aiming for productive sustainability and the reduction of environmental impact from the use of agrochemicals.
The technical body of knowledge derived from this research will be consolidated in a Technical Manual of Phytosanitary Excellence for Potato Cultivation in Nariño.
The session included the participation of technicians and key officials from the potato sector, including representatives from the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA), the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nariño, the municipal Secretariats of Agriculture of Pasto and Tangua, Universidad de Nariño, Fedepapa, and sector guild leaders. This interinstitutional coordination ensures technical validation and the effective transfer of technology to rural producers.
In essence, this project is a strategic investment in the economic and environmental sustainability of the potato production chain in Nariño.
