Regional Agroecology Meeting of the Orinoquía: On the Road to the National Agroecology Roundtable

Regional Agroecology Meeting of the Orinoquía: On the Road to the National Agroecology Roundtable

Villavicencio, Meta. December 23, 2025. During December 18, 19, and 20, the La Libertad Research Center was the venue for the Regional Agroecology Meeting of the Orinoquía, a strategic space for dialogue, territorial articulation, and collective construction that will provide essential inputs to the National Agroecology Roundtable, led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR).

This meeting was held within the framework of strengthening the Colombian agroecological movement, which promotes agroecology as a comprehensive approach to rural development, social justice, nature protection, and the dignification of peasant, Indigenous, and community life. From the territories, this movement promotes sustainable productive practices based on local knowledge, biodiversity, responsible use of natural resources, and the construction of solidarity-based economies.

The main purpose of the Meeting was to strengthen and establish the Public Policy on Agroecology, an initiative promoted by the MADR, which seeks to foster agroecology and other agricultures for life, oriented toward the construction of sustainable territorial food systems. This policy contributes to the productive transformation of the Colombian countryside, the strengthening of food sovereignty and food security, biodiversity conservation, adaptation and mitigation in the face of the climate crisis, and the well-being of Colombian society.

During these three days, spaces for reflection, thematic working groups, and participatory exercises were developed around strategic axes such as: agroecological knowledge management, agroecological production and transition, agroecology-based distribution, marketing, and consumption, and agrobiodiversity, biocultural systems, and the climate crisis, recognizing the importance of integrating traditional, peasant, academic, and scientific knowledge.

The Meeting brought together more than 60 producer associations, social organizations, agroecological collectives, and institutional actors from different municipalities and departments of the Orinoquía region, including Meta, Guaviare, Vichada, Arauca, and Casanare, demonstrating the territorial, cultural, and productive diversity of the region, as well as the collective interest in influencing the formulation of public policies from the territories.

In this context, the researchers, organizations, and participants of the Meeting defined a common purpose to guide regional actions in agroecology, which aim:

To promote the effective implementation of the Public Policy on Agroecology and its approaches in the Orinoquía, strengthening the intersectoral social fabric and its water, biodiversity, and landscape potential, to guarantee the continuity of the communities in the territories, their cultures, arts, knowledge, and worldviews of ethnic, peasant, and urban peoples, for a dignified, secure, and sovereign life.

This purpose reflects the shared vision of territorial actors, recognizing agroecology not only as a productive approach but as a social, cultural, and environmental project that promotes harmonious relationships between communities and nature.

Participants highlighted the importance of these regional spaces as arenas for political advocacy, organizational strengthening, and the construction of shared agendas, which enable the consolidation of a regional roadmap and its articulation with the national agroecology agenda.

Through organizing these regional meetings, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reaffirms its commitment to a participatory construction of the Public Policy on Agroecology, recognizing the fundamental role of producers, social organizations, academia, and research centers.

For its part, the Corporation reaffirms its role as a strategic ally in research, innovation, and knowledge transfer processes, contributing technical and scientific capacities to the strengthening of agroecology and sustainable rural development in the Orinoquía.
