Rural Youth Visits the La Libertad Research Center to Strengthen their Knowledge in Production Systems

Villavicencio, September 2025. — For four days, AGROSAVIA’s La Libertad Research Center hosted students linked to the Rural Youth project, led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and implemented throughout the country, with a special focus on the Orinoquia region.

The purpose of the activity was to strengthen and deepen the students’ knowledge of sustainable production models from the pedagogical projects carried out in schools, through the recognition of the corporation’s plant and animal germplasm banks, which they will later implement in their educational institutions.

The first group included ninth, tenth, and eleventh-grade students from Colegio Concentración de Desarrollo Rural in San José del Guaviare, who learned about the pig unit for the conservation of the Casco de Mula creole pig, the Plant Germplasm Bank, and other areas of the research center. They also participated in an academic fair organized in collaboration with universities in Villavicencio, such as Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, Universidad del Meta, Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios, and Universidad Santo Tomás, with the purpose of expanding their opportunities for access to higher education.

As part of the agenda, they also visited Universidad de los Llanos, Barcelona campus, where they explored its academic programs and toured its facilities.

The second group included eighth to eleventh-grade students from Institución Educativa Agrícola Guacavía, from the municipality of Cumaral, who are currently being trained in cattle and pig production. During their visit to the La Libertad Research Center, they toured the research areas and later learned about the university campus and academic programs of Universidad Santo Tomás, Aguas Claras campus, in Villavicencio.

Both educational institutions are currently moving forward in infrastructure adaptation processes aimed at sustainable pig production and, in the case of Guacavía, strengthening dual-purpose cattle ranching.

Through these types of events, AGROSAVIA and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reaffirm their commitment to training new generations of rural producers, providing them with tools to transform the Colombian countryside through innovation, science, and sustainability.
