Science and tradition are on the same path toward consolidating territorial innovation systems

In the heart of the Llanos Orientales region, science and tradition came together in a dialogue and collective construction dialogue. From September 1 to 4, AGROSAVIA, through its Palmira (Valle del Cauca) and La Libertad (Meta) Research Centers, carried out a successful inter-center technical tour focused on strengthening rainfed rice systems, with the participation of 22 members of the López Adentro Indigenous Reservation of the Nasa people, from northern Cauca.

Over four days, the tour covered key scenarios:

  • Sept. 1 | La Libertad Research Center (Meta): internal tours and socialization of experiences in precision agriculture and cover systems in seasonal crops.
  • Sept. 2 | Pachaquiaro (Meta): visit to the Fedearroz production plant and the Santa Rosa Experimental Center, with emphasis on seed breeding and low-carbon rice.
  • Sept. 3 | Restrepo (Meta): exchange at the Fedearroz seed plant, where varieties such as Fedearroz 67, 68, 70, Itaguá, 2000, and Ibis were analyzed.
  • Sept. 4 | Yopal – Pore (Casanare): meeting at the Casanare Rice Cluster and forum on technical perspectives of organic agriculture.

Each day was a space for collaborative dialogue, where producers, researchers, and local organizations shared experiences, evaluated technological alternatives, and explored joint solutions to climatic and productive challenges.

Yanine Rozó, Lead Researcher of the Territorial Innovation Systems Project in Cauca, stated, “It was a two-way exchange. The producers of the López Adentro Reservation have a deep knowledge of their soils and climate cycles, which enriches our research. Together, we can co-create solutions that truly work in the territory. This exchange of experiences allows them to consider innovating other forms of production in favor of their sustainability and productivity.”

The tour included the participation of Universidad Autónoma Indígena Intercultural, the Regional Indigenous Council of Cauca (CRIC, for its Spanish acronym), and local authorities, who accompanied the process and joined efforts to strengthen the link between science, cultural relevance, and territorial innovation.

This inter-center exercise reaffirms AGROSAVIA’s commitment to consolidating Territorial Innovation Systems (TIS) through the articulation of scientific and ancestral knowledge, promoting sustainable solutions with cultural identity for the future of Colombian agriculture.

Bertulfo Velasco, of the López Adentro Indigenous Reservation, Nasa people, affirmed, “I take with me an enjoyable experience; it was a very valuable contribution made by Agrosavia…the knowledge acquired on rice-related topics… we bring back to our communities lessons on clean rice, drying, more productive systems, and more advanced practices. Thank you, Agrosavia.”

With this technical tour, AGROSAVIA reaffirms that innovation is not built in isolation, but through collaborative dialogue between communities and science, cultivating capacities that transform the lives of producers and strengthen the country’s agricultural sector.
