Description
Mini tubers are potato seeds of high genetic, phytosanitary, physiological, and physical quality, obtained under protected conditions in aeroponics or conventional beds, belonging to the Super Elite and Elite categories. Basic seed registered and finally certified is produced from potato mini tubers. They are materials of genetic purity, high yield, and healthy concerning the traditional seed management used in commercial potato cultivation.
Mini tubers are produced under aeroponic technology that allows for supplying the amount of water and nutrients required by the plants and having good morphological characteristics, ready for the propagation of the species. The varieties offered are: Perla Negra, Agrosavia Mary, Diacol Capiro (R12), Parda Pastusa, Tuquerreña, Ica Única, Ica Puracé, Roja Nariño, Rubí, Criolla Sol Andina, Criolla Colombia, and Superior. Their recommended areas are all the potato municipalities of Colombia.
The production in the aeroponics system is 35 mini tubers per plant, much higher than the 10 tubers obtained on average in the traditional system. It helps to increase the area planted with certified seed in the country, thus, improving productivity per unit area in potato cultivation. It allows small producers to access quality plant material. The formal system is used for scaling, and the informal system (low-quality tubers) is displaced. This material (super elite and elite seed) is 100% free of viruses and diseases. The use of healthy plant material influences the reduction in the incidence of viral diseases and, thus, reduces losses, considering that, in the production costs of the potato crop, the seed is generally a high-cost input.
