Agroclimatically intelligent decision-making support system

Description

The Expert System – Models for Agroclimatic Adaptation and Prevention (SE-MAPA, for its acronym in Spanish) is a technological platform with a climate-smart agriculture approach that contributes to increasing local capacity to make decisions aimed at improving the adaptation of agricultural systems in the context of adaptation to climate change. The SE-MAPA consists of three modules:

Module A (Let us study the territory): provides agroclimatic information and technological recommendations for 54 production systems in 18 country departments.
Module B (Water-Yield Calculation): estimates water trends and yields in crops such as tomatoes and beans using soil and climate data provided by the user or whoever provides the module.
Module C (Specialized Glossary): contains a catalog of expressions for understanding the ACI approach. It consists of a brief description, an expanded definition, a source, and supporting information.

The benefits of SE-MAPA are:

Users will better understand the climatology of their environment and some of the territory's biophysical processes.
The available cartography allows for teaching and discussion among technical assistance networks, agricultural extension, and producers on the analysis of land-use suitability and water availability for crop management.
The agroclimatic early warning system (pilot available in module C) guides the selection of appropriate management options when water stress occurs. The pilot is available for tomato crops in the municipality of Repelón (Atlántico), cauliflower in Paipa (Boyacá), and dairy cattle in Buesaco (Nariño).
The glossary available in module C is a contribution to the theoretical and technical appropriation of climate-smart agriculture and agroclimatic risk terms.

ES-MAPA is the only comprehensive platform in the country between climate and agriculture. Other applications that model crops using data and information on climate variables and that complement the experience of using the ES-MAPA expert system include Pronósticos Aclimate Colombia [Aclimate Forecasting Colombia]: an initiative of Fedearroz, Fenalce and CIAT; Climático para el Arroz [Climatic for Rice]: A platform of Fedearroz and Agroclima, and Plataforma Agroclimática Cafetera [Coffee Agroclimatic Platform]: Initiative of Cenicafé.
