Recommendations for producing pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan [L.] Huth) seed are described, starting with the activities associated with seed production through harvesting and conditioning to product storage. With these recommendations, higher yields per hectare can be obtained, seed quality can be guaranteed, and it can be turned into a competitive and profitable product compared to the seed available on the market or produced through traditional methods.
These recommendations also serve as a guide for the commercial production of pigeon pea grains, for green and dry consumption, and for its culinary use based on its high acceptance in the market of the department of Atlántico in the preparation of different dishes (pigeon pea soup, sweets, and desserts) due to its contribution to food security, its high nutritional content, and its adaptation to Colombian soil and climate conditions.
The content of the recommendations is available through the Technical Manual for the production of pigeon pea seed (Cajanus cajan (L.) Huth) in Colombia, which includes special chapters dedicated to obtaining quality seed in the selected category aimed at meeting the requirements of Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA) [the Colombian Agricultural Institute], described in Resolutions 3168 of 2015 and 3188 of 2015. This manual delves into topics such as traceability, elimination of off-type plants, post-harvest, internal quality control, packaging and labeling, and seed storage. Finally, the requirements and steps to apply for a seed producer selected by the Technical Seed Directorate at ICA's national offices are described.
Its use is recommended for the departments of Atlántico, Córdoba, Boyacá, and Magdalena.
