Scientific Scan on Trends in the Use and Value Addition of Cocoa Waste
This study analyzes global trends in the use of cocoa waste to generate value-added products such as biofertilizers, biofuels, and biomedical materials. Based on nearly 300 publications, it identifies opportunities to transform this waste into valuable inputs for sustainable agriculture and industry. Colombia ranks among the most active countries in related research. Emerging topics include circular economy, biochar, and cadmium reduction in soils. The valorization of cocoa waste is driving the development of sustainable solutions and the bioeconomy.
This study is part of the research outputs derived from the project: Strengthening the Integrated Management of Organic Solid Agricultural Materials through Circular Economy Strategies to Promote Environmental and Productive Sustainability of Smallholder Farming Families in the Department of Santander.
It was funded by the Government of the Department of Santander in 2023 and executed by the Colombian Corporation for Agricultural Research – AGROSAVIA (C.I. La Suiza).
