90 Heifers strengthen dual-purpose livestock systems for 30 Afro-descendant producers in Fortul, Arauca

90 Heifers strengthen dual-purpose livestock systems for 30 Afro-descendant producers in Fortul, Arauca

Fortul, Arauca. July 29, 2026. On July 23 and 24, 2026, AGROSAVIA delivered 90 dual-purpose heifers to 30 producers benefiting from the project "Strengthening the Capacities of NARP Families through the Establishment of Live Fences in the Municipality of Fortul, Department of Arauca." This initiative aims to increase the productivity and competitiveness of dual-purpose livestock production systems managed by Afro-Colombian, Raizal, and Palenquero communities.

The delivery of the animals marks a significant milestone in the implementation of the project, which seeks to intervene in 91 farms through a comprehensive set of actions designed to strengthen livestock production systems. These actions include pasture renovation, improvements to productive infrastructure, the incorporation of tree species through silvopastoral systems, the enhancement of technical and organizational capacities, and the acquisition of livestock.

The initiative is being implemented in coordination with the Territorial Renewal Agency (ART) under an agreement with Fondo Colombia en Paz. It forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen productive projects with communities in PDET municipalities, which have been historically affected by armed conflict. In the Department of Arauca, this effort includes interventions in the municipalities of Fortul, Tame, and Saravena.

The project targets Afro-Colombian, Raizal, and Palenquero families in the municipality of Fortul and seeks to improve their productive conditions through an integrated approach that combines the strengthening of dual-purpose livestock production, environmental sustainability, and capacity building for the management of productive systems.

One of the project's core components is the establishment of silvopastoral systems, which promote the integration of trees into livestock production systems and improve both the environmental and productive conditions of farms. These efforts are complemented by activities such as pasture renovation and improvements to productive infrastructure, all aimed at creating more suitable conditions for livestock production.

The project also recognizes producer associations as a fundamental pillar for the sustainability of productive initiatives, promoting processes that strengthen community capacities and create greater opportunities for the economic and social development of the territory.

The delivery of the 90 heifers to 30 producers therefore represents a key milestone within a broader process of technical support and productive intervention aimed at consolidating more productive, competitive, and sustainable livestock systems, in accordance with the conditions and needs of the beneficiary communities.

Through initiatives such as this, the National Government, through ART and AGROSAVIA, reaffirms its commitment to rural development. Through agricultural research, technology transfer, and on-site technical assistance, the Corporation strengthens the productive capacities of rural communities and contributes to the sustainable transformation of regions that have been historically affected by armed conflict.
