A strategic alliance is created for sustainable agricultural development in Cundinamarca
  • The focus of the alliance aims to promote livestock and minor species farming (with special emphasis on beekeeping and sheep production), priority agricultural crops (such as the chains for potatoes, sugar cane for panela production, and vegetables and fruit trees), and the management of agroclimatic risk in the department.

Mosquera, Cundinamarca. March 7, 2024. In an event that marks a milestone in the agricultural sustainable development of the department, AGROSAVIA's Tibaitatá Research Center received the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cundinamarca, under the direction of Engineer Marcos Alberto Barreto García, and the Secretariat of Economic Development and Environment of Madrid, led by Francisco Gutiérrez. Managers and advisors from the two institutions visited the Tibaitatá Research Center and learned first-hand about the technological showcases, demonstration modules, and laboratories available to promote sustainable rural development in Cundinamarca.

The meeting included the presentation of expectations and ongoing proposals to carry out Departmental and Municipal Development Plans in the agricultural sector. The Director of the Tibaitatá Research Center, Juan Diego Palacio, and his team presented the Corporation's infrastructure, projects, and strengths, highlighting its commitment to science, technology, and innovation applied to the Colombian countryside.

As a result of the conversations with the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cundinamarca, four active working groups were agreed upon, focusing on strategic areas for departmental agricultural development. The priority topics addressed were livestock and minor species farming (such as beekeeping and sheep production), priority agricultural crops (such as the chains for potatoes, sugar cane for panela production, and vegetables and fruit trees), and agroclimatic risk management.

These working groups, which will have dedicated coordinating delegates, demonstrate the firm commitment of the parties to initiate concrete actions in favor of the department's producers. The Agro-Climatic Risk Management worktable, in fact, moved forward its first session, signaling a promising start in the fight against the adverse effects of climate change on local agriculture.

The alliance between the Tibaitatá Research Center and the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cundinamarca represents a significant step towards a more prosperous and sustainable future for the agricultural sector of the department, which not only promises to strengthen agricultural production but also promotes innovation and resilience in the face of the climate challenges faced by the region.
