- AGROSAVIA has opened registration for a free virtual course to strengthen participants' capacity to design, establish, and manage silvopastoral systems, a strategy that contributes to more productive, sustainable, and climate-resilient livestock production in Colombia's high tropical region.
Mosquera, Cundinamarca. July 24, 2026. Silvopastoral systems have become one of the leading alternatives for transforming livestock production into a more efficient and sustainable activity. By integrating trees, shrubs, and pastures within the same production system, these approaches improve forage availability for livestock, enhance animal welfare, reduce environmental impacts, and strengthen farms' capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change.
To enable more farmers and stakeholders in the agricultural sector to implement these technologies on their farms, Corporación colombiana de investigación agropecuaria (AGROSAVIA) has opened registration for the virtual course "Establishment and Management of Silvopastoral Systems to Promote Sustainable Livestock Production in Colombia's High Tropical Region."
This initiative is part of the Technology Transfer Plan for Bovine Feeding Systems in Boyacá and Cundinamarca – Phase II, through which AGROSAVIA promotes the adoption of technologies developed by the Livestock Research Network at the Tibaitatá Research and Technology Transfer Center.
A Tool for Bringing Science to the Field
The course was designed to strengthen the technical capacities of livestock producers, technical advisors, extension agents, students, producer organizations, and other stakeholders across the cold-climate dairy and beef value chains by providing practical tools to support informed decision-making for establishing and managing silvopastoral systems.
"The goal is for participants to apply this knowledge in their own production systems and move toward livestock production that is more sustainable, more productive, and better prepared to address the challenges posed by climate change," explains Javier Castillo, M.Sc. Researcher at the Tibaitatá Research and Technology Transfer Center.
Over a period of twelve weeks, participants will complete a 48-hour training program that combines online content available through the Moodle virtual learning platform, assigned readings, and learning activities focused on the practical application of the concepts covered.
From System Design to Integrated Management of Silvopastoral Systems
The course covers the key technical aspects required to implement silvopastoral systems under the conditions of Colombia's high tropical region. Participants will learn to select the most suitable plant species, plan and design these systems, establish them properly, and implement management practices that enhance productivity and long-term sustainability.
The training also includes methodologies for evaluating technical, economic, and environmental indicators, enabling participants to better understand the benefits these systems can deliver for livestock production while contributing to the conservation of natural resources.
An Open Invitation to the Livestock Sector
Although the course is primarily intended for individuals involved in cold-climate dairy and beef cattle production, anyone interested in the topic is welcome to apply. The only requirements are internet access to complete the activities on the virtual platform and a basic understanding of cattle production systems.
Registration will remain open until August 14, 2026, and no selection process or admission filters will be applied, providing broad access to this training opportunity.
By strengthening human capacity in the establishment and management of silvopastoral systems, the Corporation contributes to increasing the adoption of practices that improve farm productivity, enhance animal welfare, and promote more sustainable livestock production in Colombia's high tropical region.
