AGROSAVIA leads regional agricultural innovation at FONTAGRO’s 21st Annual Technical Project Monitoring Workshop in Costa Rica

San José, Costa Rica. July 10, 2026. With the goal of transforming agrifood systems across Latin America and the Caribbean, Corporación colombiana de investigación agropecuaria (AGROSAVIA) reaffirmed its commitment to research and sustainable development through its active participation in the 21st FONTAGRO Annual Technical Project Monitoring Workshop, held in Costa Rica from July 8 to 10 under the theme “Innovate to Grow: Towards Sustainable Agrifood Systems in the Region.”

The event, a high-level strategic forum, brought together government authorities, researchers, and institutional leaders to strengthen collaboration on science, innovation, and international cooperation. The workshop received key support from organizations including the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), and the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA), along with other strategic partners.

 

AGROSAVIA: A Driving Force for Knowledge Across Latin America

Throughout the workshop, AGROSAVIA presented significant progress across its project portfolio, highlighting the strength of its applied research. The Corporation showcased results in five strategic areas critical to regional food security and climate resilience:

Climate Change Resilience: Application of bioproducts to help agricultural systems adapt to adverse climate conditions.

Food Security: Development of climate-resilient potato varieties for the Andean Region.

Sustainable Livestock Production: Innovations to reduce methane emissions and promote the adoption of silvopastoral systems in family farming.

Technology and Innovation: Advances in Tropical Agriculture 4.0 through efficient water resource management.

Plant Health: Strengthening technical capacities for the prevention and management of Fusarium wilt in Musaceae, a critical threat to the banana and plantain industries across the region.

Committed to Science with Impact

AGROSAVIA’s participation in this forum reinforces its leadership across the region. The Corporation currently serves as the lead implementing institution for 13 research projects and as a co-implementing partner in 16 additional initiatives. This broad technical engagement positions AGROSAVIA as a strategic partner for countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean in developing science-based solutions to current agricultural challenges.

The workshop agenda, which included technical field visits to Universidad Tecnológica Nacional (UTN) and working sessions at IICA headquarters, provided an important platform for strengthening strategic partnerships and defining a shared roadmap toward a more productive, sustainable, and innovation-driven agricultural sector, supported by the expertise of specialists from across the region.
