AGROSAVIA presented the partial results of the onion project for Norte de Santander

The research project financed with resources from Fondo de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación of the General System of Royalties destined from the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Government of Norte de Santander, is executed from the La Suiza Research Center and the Cúcuta Headquarters of AGROSAVIA.

Ocaña, Norte de Santander. June 21, 2023. Within the framework of the project entitled “Development of a sustainable bulb onion production model for the province of Ocaña in the department of Norte de Santander,” four days of socialization of results were carried out in the department, in the municipalities of Ocaña, La Playa de Belén, El Carmen and Hacarí.

The research team that was in the area and is linked to this initiative is part of different Research Centers of AGROSAVIA: La Suiza (Santander), Cúcuta Headquarters (Norte de Santander), Palmira (Valle del Cauca), Motilonia (Cesar), La Selva (Antioquia), and Tibaitatá (Cundinamarca).

The Lead Researcher, Yanine Rozo, announced that in June, she began a tour in the main municipalities “who are participating in this project, to socialize the partial results of the main activities of the project” that have been developed in the last year and have allowed “to characterize the producers and the productive system of the province.”

She added that, among the main results obtained, the identification of three producer typologies related to the main productive system in which they are focused, their family support, or the characteristics of their cultivation and production are highlighted.

She also announced that, currently, the initial results of the main diseases that occur in the crop and the biotic and abiotic factors that affect “both the ocañera onion and the Peruvian onion” have been achieved. Finally, the Researcher Rozo concluded that there is significant progress in the characterization of materials collected in the field and germplasm banks.

The project has various complementary components, such as agro-climatic aspects, integrated soil management, phytosanitary problems, and socioeconomic aspects, and finalizes its first year of execution and research. It is expected that during the remaining two years of its projection, more workdays will be held to share the results with the local community and allied regional entities.
