Santa Marta, Magdalena. May 16, 2023. Within the framework of the SUR-SUR bilateral cooperation project promoted by Agencia Presidencial de Cooperación Internacional de Colombia - APC, Corporación colombiana de investigación agropecuaria – AGROSAVIA received a visit from six officials of Servicio Nacional de Calidad y Sanidad Vegetal y de Semillas – SENAVE of Paraguay, who received intensive training in the detection, diagnosis, surveillance, containment, management, and biosafety of the Fusarium wilt of banana or Panama disease, caused by the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense R4T.
This exchange of experiences began at the facilities of the Tibaitatá Research Center, where the officials had the opportunity to learn about the best practices to address this devastating disease that affects banana crops. Subsequently, they visited the Caribia Research Center in the Magdalena department to delve into biosafety and containment measures.

They also visited a farm in Zona Bananera, where they were able to observe first-hand the biosecurity measures implemented and the management practices used to deal with Fusarium R4T. This field experience allowed them to understand the practical challenges and effective strategies local producers use. Mauricio Soto, Ph.D. Research Associate stressed, “The success of this visit was based on the commitment and dedication of the SENAVE officials and the close and fruitful collaboration between AGROSAVIA and the phytosanitary authorities of Paraguay. Together, we are working to protect the banana industry and ensure the safety and sustainability of this important crop.”
During their stay, the SENAVE officials participated in theoretical and practical sessions, exchanged knowledge with experts in plant pathology and molecular biology from AGROSAVIA, and had the opportunity to establish contacts and share experiences with colleagues in the sector.
