In Tibacuy, farm resources become allies in agroecological transition

• Rural producers from Tibacuy, Cundinamarca, participated in practical sessions on sustainable livestock farming and agroecological home gardens conducted by AGROSAVIA as part of the second phase of the National Agroecology Plan (PlaNA). The use of local resources and hands-on learning were at the heart of these activities.

  

Mosquera, Cundinamarca. September 9, 2026. What resources available on a farm can be better utilized to produce more sustainably? Starting with this question, AGROSAVIA supported the activities carried out with producers from Tibacuy as part of PlaNA.

In August, activities focused on two key areas for rural families in the municipality were conducted: livestock farming and vegetable production. The purpose was to identify available farm resources and explore alternatives that could be practically incorporated into production systems.

 

Sustainable Livestock Farming: Making the Most of What Is Available on the Farm

On August 21, the workshop "Sustainable Livestock Management Practices for the Agroecological Transition in Tibacuy" was held at Quininí Zimbabwe Farm, with the participation of 30 attendees, including local producers and members of the APRENAT Association.

The session combined technical concepts with hands-on activities related to animal nutrition, strategic supplementation, and silvopastoral systems.

One of the main exercises was preparing silage using resources available in the area, such as King grass and Mexican sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia). Producers learned the process step by step and directly participated in the preparation, compaction, and storage of the material. This strengthened their knowledge of forage conservation and helped them assess how to adapt the practice to the specific conditions of their own farms. Mexican sunflower was also presented as an alternative for diversifying the forage supply. At the end of the session, each participant received a seedling to promote its establishment, propagation, and use on their farms.

 

From Seed to Home Garden

On August 28, the Agroecological Home Gardens Workshop was held to strengthen knowledge and practices related to vegetable propagation and the agroecological transition on farms.

The session offered an opportunity to work hands-on on alternatives for producing planting material, establishing vegetable crops, and diversifying family gardens.

This process is linked to the development of a community vegetable nursery in Tibacuy, conceived as a space to produce seedlings and support the home gardens of participating producers. In this way, the production of planting material, the establishment of home gardens, and the use of resources available on each farm are becoming increasingly interconnected as part of a single agroecological transition process.

 

Agroecology Built from the Territory

These activities are part of the actions AGROSAVIA is carrying out in Tibacuy during the second phase of the National Agroecology Plan (PlaNA), within the framework of the 2026 Goals and Results of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The process builds on the work initiated with producers in the municipality and continues to strengthen home gardens, silvopastoral systems, aquaponics, a community nursery, and the use of local resources.

The approach is straightforward: recognize what already exists in the territory, strengthen producers' knowledge, and promote alternatives that farms can maintain beyond the project's duration.

In Tibacuy, the agroecological transition is being built through hands-on practice, using available resources and integrating local knowledge with technical tools that support the consolidation of more sustainable production systems.
